Umrao Jaan Film Review

SUNIL

Umrao Jaan
is a Bollywood genre film, set in India during the 1800s.

The film stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abshiek Bachchan, Sunil Shetty. As a child little Ameeran, was loved by her parents and brother. They weren’t a rich family, but people thought they were because Ameerana’s father inherited a palace. Eventually, grudges were begotten by neighbors, and one cruel man decided to take revenge on Ameeran’s father for being such a good person. This villain kidnaps young Ameeran and decides to cut up her body and throw them to the birds, but his accomplice thinks it too messy, and convinces him to sell her to a brothel instead, that way they’ll get a few paltry rupees out of the deal. The brothel owner has a great liking to Ameeran and renames her Umrao, leaving an older woman to care for her. Years pass, Umrao learns to dance and entertain, but feels jealous of the other courtesans. They were surrounded with lovers who would comb their hair, while Umrao would have to do it all herself. Time passes, a royal family in town is to host a wedding party, they invite the brothel to select the best dancer to perform. The brothel keep selects the most unlikely one: Umrao, the social castaway. Finally she would haveher chance, her limelight. From there she finds a most unexpected encounter, and falls in love with a Sultan’s son. What happens when a sultan falls in love with a courtesan? Watch to find out. Our Rating: 7/10 The music was beautiful, the film picturesque. Overall it left one with a bitter taste in their mouth at the end. The moral of the story was a tragic, bitter truth. Great film for dramatics, Aish. looks incredible in this one, and great with her husband, but then Shetty comes in and makes things–well complicated, lots of karma-tie in’s. A great piece for historical fans. Interested in more? Watch the music video that made this film sparkle: Get the film from Amazon!
