Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam Film Review (1999)

I figured today might be just as good a day as any other to finally review this film. This little number took my by surprise in the dark November nights and taught me a few things about Bollywood.

Lets get started already.

The film stars our lovely Aishwarya Rai (now Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn (Ajay Devgan) in lead roles — with a special appearance by Helen (Salman Khan’s real life stepmom).

The film begins with a young singer from Italy, named Sameer (Salman Khan), who treks to his deceased father’s friend’s house in India to learn music. That family friend, a revered, classical Indian vocalist has a very adamant daughter named Nandini (Aishwarya Rai). She’s frustrated and reluctant to give up her room (the best room in the house) to a Italian bard.

He arrives, and the two have petty fights, teasing and taunting, but they sing together and learn from each other. Eventually their frustrations turn to love.

But when Nandini’s father finds out such a thing is abrewin’ he takes a step forward and asks Sameer to return to Italy, for their love can never bear fruit.

In the meantime, Nandini is engaged against her will to Vanraj, a promising young man who is entranced with Nandini at first sight.

What will happen to Nandini, and Sameer, and who is Vanraj?

Watch Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam to find out!

Our Rating: 8.7/10

This film is absolutely brilliant, everything anyone could ever want from a Salman Khan film: romance, comedy, humility, forbidden love, and of course the favorite of everyone romantic tragedy.

The characters sparkle and shine in this one, Aishwarya looks divine, Salman–young and hopeful, and Ajay–a tragic lover.

The music is incredible, the team here even made a special trip to Little India in Chicago to pick up a legit soundtrack from T-series. Definitely the film is worth watching just for the music, but the great story is an added bonus.

So on to the actual story review:

The film starts out a little slow, but then picks up and leaves viewers enthralled, and at the edge of their seats. You’ll find yourself wondering “What will happen? Will she really marry him? What about Sameer? Will they Elope?” There is a lot of tension, and a lot of love. It’s a great film for couples, women, men, etc. but it’s not really a family film or recommended for kids for a few violent scenes. It’s one of those films that are hard to predict, and leave you wondering at the end, but in a good way. The film ends well and plays well if you can sit it out past the beginning.
