During these cold months, one can’t help but reminisce, so we decided to take out some old Hindi language Bollywood films and give them a watch, one of those films was Karan Arjun, from 1995.
The film brings together a rare and unexpected cast of a young Shah Ruhk Khan, Salman Khan, Johnny Lever, Kajol, Ranjeet, Kirron Kher, Raakhee Gulzar, Mamta Kulkarni to name a few. Perhaps the most notable casting is that of Amrish Puri: here he plays perhaps his most frightful and devilish villian ever (he plays the really scary, greedy, crazy and blood thirsty uncle of Salman and SRK’s characters– Durjan Singh)
The film is about two brothers: Karan and Arjun (Salman Khan and Shah Ruhk Khan) and their poor mother Durga (Raakhee Gulzar). The brothers work as miners to make money to buy their mother pretty bangles to wear like the other village women. Yet she won’t wear pretty bangles, because she carries a dark secret (its not really that dark but the film suggests that it is really extreme and dark) concerning her husband’s linage, and in turn–the boy’s linage.
If you want to know the BIG secret, its really (highlight to see spoiler): that the boys are related to the richest family in town, and get offered the estate by their dying grandfather, only to BE KILLED a little bit after, by the SCARY DEVIL DURJAN SINGH and his cronies!!
It’s a big shocker, but after that the boys reincarnate and find girls to love, and seek revenge for their poor mothers sake.
Our Rating: 6/10
This film is really old, and pretty golden in the encylopedia of Bollywood films. The film represents a glimpse back to the old school styles of Indian Bollywood film making, and feels a little rustic, and a bit cultic, but overall it’s a refreshing, heavy watch. Not good for first time watchers of Hindi films, but definitely rich. Salman and SRK look really, really young in this film, for a look back to the early 90s in rural India, check this film out.
